Dennis A. Schoville Bio
Mr. Schoville was born in Richland Center, Wisconsin, in 1945. After receiving his preparatory education at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, he qualified as a U.S. Army aviator and served in the Vietnam War as a helicopter flight section commander. During that time, he was awarded two Silver Stars, the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Bronze Star, three Purple Hearts, and several Air Medals and Service Awards. Following his retirement from active duty at the rank of captain, he pursued legal studies at the Illinois Institute of Technology (J.D., with distinction, 1973) and Northwestern University (L.L.M., 1974).
From 1974 to February 1997, Mr. Schoville was a Partner with Gray, Cary, Ames & Frye and Gray Cary Ware & Freidenrich. He established the firm of Schoville & Arnell, LLP in February 1997, and practices primarily in the areas of personal injury, products liability, insurance bad faith, and wrongful termination. He was the lead trial lawyer in Wilson v. Ford Motor Company which resulted in a verdict for $369,000,000 for his clients. He has obtained in excess of 25 multi-million dollar settlements and verdicts, including $6,800,000 for Lt. Paula Coughlin in the landmark Tailhook trial.
Dennis has received the San Diego Trial Lawyers Association Outstanding Trial Advocacy Award on four separate occasions. In 1995 and 1999, the Consumer Attorneys of San Diego awarded him its "Trial Lawyer of the Year Award." In 1996 he received the Daniel T. Broderick Memorial Award, epitomizing the highest standards of civility, integrity and professionalism in the San Diego community. In 2004 he received the Illinois Institute of Technology - Chicago-Kent Professional Achievement Award and is the recipient of the Consumer Attorneys of San Diego - Consumer Advocate of the Year Award (2005).
Currently, Mr. Schoville is a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers, a Master in the American Inns of Court, a member of the American Board of Trial Advocates and its National Board of Directors, and currently serves as vice-chair of the San Diego County Bar Judicial Evaluation Committee. Dennis is a member of the Consumer Attorneys of San Diego, the Consumer Attorneys of California, the American Trial Lawyers Association and the American Bar Association. He has also served as President of the San Diego Chapter of ABOTA, President of the Consumer Attorneys of San Diego, President of the Foundation of the Consumer Attorneys of San Diego, Superior Court Judge pro tempore and as a member of the Board of Trustees of the Jamul-Dulzura Union School District for 12 years, including three terms as President. He currently is listed in the Best Lawyers in America publication and in 2004 was voted one of the "Top 100 Most Influential Attorneys in California" by the Los Angeles Daily Journal.
