Brian McKeen began practicing law in 1982. Upon his graduation from Thomas M. Cooley Law School, Brian clerked for the Honorable Dorothy Comstock Riley at the Michigan Court of Appeals and Michigan Supreme Court.

Since 1983, Brian has devoted his career to representing victims and their families of medical malpractice and wrongful death. During his career, he has become a powerful advocate for his clients and has tried cases throughout the United States, and is an international lecturer on medical malpractice topics, especially birth trauma. He is considered one of the foremost medical malpractice attorneys in the nation and has consistently generated the region’s largest verdicts and settlements for his clients.

Brian has mentored and taught hundreds of young and new attorneys through his lectures and workshop participation through AAJ and state trial attorney organizations.

Brian currently sits on the executive boards of the Michigan Association for Justice (MAJ) – of which he served as past president– and the Board of Governors of the American Association for Justice (AAJ). He has served as chair of the AAJ Professional Negligence Section, Medical Negligence Exchange Group and Birth Trauma Litigation Group. He has lectured internationally on medical malpractice topics, especially in regards to birth trauma.

McKeen was inducted into The Inner Circle of Advocates in 2009, an invitational-only group of the top plaintiff attorneys in the nation.

Brian and his team routinely represents victims of some of the world’s worst physician practices including Farid Fata; Yasser Awaad; John Verbovsky; and Larry Nassar.

Brian has generated many of the top verdicts in Michigan, including securing the state’s largest medical malpractice verdict on record in 2001, when jury rendered a verdict award of $55 million in the case of Hall v Henry Ford Health System. McKeen & Associates also topped all Michigan verdict awards in 2002, with an award of $22.5 million; in 2006, with an award of $16 million; in 2007, with an award of $35 million; and in 2016, with an award of $19 million. In 2018, he won a verdict of $130 million, resulting in the largest Judgment of a medical malpractice case in Michigan’s history.

Other notable top verdicts include: A 2017 verdict for $9 million in medical malpractice suit in 2017, in Houghton county, the largest verdict in Michigan’s upper peninsula; the largest medical malpractice settlement in Michigan history in 2018, for $16.2 on behalf of an injured premature infant; and the largest verdict in Michigan history for shoulder dystocia case at $12.9 million.

Brian has been named to the Michigan Super Lawyers, Michigan Leading Lawyers and Top Lawyers lists and most recently was named a 2019 Top Rated Lawyer by Martindale-Hubbell.

On an ongoing basis, Brian and his team lead efforts to help with the less fortunate in the community, especially children. Past and current outreach includes:
• Assembled and donated “care” backpacks for families staying at Ronald McDonald House in Detroit
• Can tab collection drive for support of Ronald McDonald House in Detroit
• School backpacks and supplies assembled and donated to Detroit schoolchildren
• Sandwich assembling and donation for homeless
• Annual adopt-a-family for Christmas
• Mitten donation drive for homeless
• Humane society walk-a-thon sponsorships
• Hundreds of hours donated to AAJ for mentoring/teaching outreach

Additionally, Brian has initiated an ongoing program in which he will match the donations raised through employees’ charitable fundraising.
